The Poster-Man! O Homem-Cartaz!

Posted in Detail Library, Gadanthara, Production on May 1st, 2012 by dilly

Quick update to show that we are living and working on the short!

In this brief post will show our latest (finished) character: The Poster-Man!

The Poster-Man is the essence of our fictional city, San Corisco. Our city is immersed in advertising posters so absurdly (more on that in another post) that pollute they more than sell. It is the spirit of what the city has become. He is part of the dirt, so it’s happy on it. A walking poster that mysteriously has its own personality.

Actually, not so mysteriously… one of our concerns in the short is to make the characters “tangible” and “credible.” They do not need to be realistic, but must convince the viewer that they are alive.
For this reason the design of this character has ”tips” about its operation, but without revealing everything. Handles turn as he walks, his face is like a sheet of acetate that mechanically exchange… but in the end there’s still  a question of how he is alive.

Gadanthara raincoat rig

Posted in Gadanthara, Production on February 8th, 2012 by dilly

Gadanthara is the main character’s name of our short film, for now titled “Detail Library”, because it is the short that started the whole idea of the project. Gadanthara is a worker of Detail Library, an institution that cares for and houses all the details of the World, he is a posters paster and really loves what he does.

This character has a peculiar personality and also an anatomy different from the usual, having everything that a human has, except for: mouth, nose, ears, neck… And besides that, he uses a yellow raincoat which consists on three layers of clothing:
An “overcoat” with a “poncho” on and a hood. We also have buttons / loops and a “belt” to tie it all. Talking about accessories, it also has a “roll” and a “bucket” used to paste the posters.

All this have to be a rig.
Relatively smooth to pose and animate.
Done without any kind of simulations (I tested it and it is very problematic).

Scenario modeling part 2/ Modelagem de cenário parte 2

Posted in Detail Library, Gadanthara, Production on January 19th, 2012 by maria

The scenario of the film Gadanthara, made by “The Detail Library Committee” is rich in detail and full of history. My name is Maria Amélia Gonçalves and with Flávio we are modeling the scenario. I’m going to explain about the process of construction and modeling in the film.

The aesthetics of the film was thought like the Stop Motions films. We got many concepts in this technique and then we transported to the 3d technique. When we are modeling the objects we think before how would this be done in miniature. We paid attention in dimensions, materials and others things. We thougth  these things before the construction.

Scenario modeling part 1/ Modelagem de cenário parte 1

Posted in Gadanthara, Production on December 7th, 2011 by flaviocmark

Just a Bar with Gadanthara's (name of the main character) dimensions (yellow cube).

My name is Flávio Carvalho Markiewicz, I’m 20 years old and studying Product Design at Universidade Estadual de Minas Gerais (UEMG, State University of Minas Gerais). I attend to the 3D classes with Dilly and started to get engaged in this project. I’ve been an intern at Detail Library’s production for four months, and intend to keep working with this for a long time.

In this first part of the project, me and the other artists are modeling the buildings and objects that will be in our beloved San Corisco. The city construction began in a 2D (vector) and 3D map, made by Daniel, using simple objects (cubes…). In this map all the streets, sidewalks and buildings of the city are marked. We also use this map to set shots and scene layouts. Based on our main character’s path and the angle/distance of the cameras, the managers marked (using different colors) the amount of detail for each building.

Our First Pencil Test – Nosso Primeiro Teste de Animação

Posted in Joana, Production on March 20th, 2011 by daniel

This is the first test of the short animation “Joana” that we are producing this year:

Este é o primeiro teste do curta de animação “Joana” que estamos produzindo este ano:

The pencil test was produced with hand-drawn sketches, scanned with the Simple Scan 2.32.0, “the drawings were assembled and edited directly in” Blender 2.56a “using a script called “Image Changer” created and migrated to blender at 2:56 by the big Dalai Felinto based on the ScriptLinks hack by Daniel Salazar (ZanQdo).

First Concepts / Primeiros Conceitos

Posted in Concepts, Joana on March 10th, 2011 by dilly

Hello!
We’re here to say again that we did not die and we continue to work on this project called Detail Library. Daniel is finishing the animation of the first scene and Damasceno has done some concepts in watercolor to put some of the ideas for the look of the short on the paper.

Here are the concepts with his comments:

I like the loose spots. Using some specific elements to characterize the space. I believe we can also work with unorthodox mix of color – as well as the application of white lines to better define some parts.
The grid, tree, lamppost and the curb “denounce” the scenario – that is nothing less than a big colored spot
The edges disappearing increase our sense of “observers”.

Visual identity / Identidade Visual

Posted in Committee, Detail Library on January 27th, 2011 by dilly

Hello everyone,

Before entering the subject of this post, I would like to announce that we have begun to animate our first short: Joana. Daniel is currently drawing on an animation table. Yes, you read it correctly, an animation table. But more details on the process of Joana will be shown in future posts.

Today I’ll present an overview of the creation process for our visual identity, the one that you see in this blog.
Last year, when I was still in college, I had some subjects related to creating visual identities. Besides my own I also decided to make the identity of this project. We used to have an “old” identity created by Damasceno, but it was originally made for what was once a short film “only”: The detail library. When the Detail Library became the name we would use for the whole project, I felt the need for another symbol.
